Who FDSA is for.
An honest look at whether our approach might be right for your son — and how to find out.
If you're reading this, you're not alone.
Being a teenager today can be tough. Emotional, behavioural and mental health challenges can impact a young person's ability to succeed in school, stay out of trouble, and achieve their goals. Many parents who contact FDSA have been worried about their son's schooling for some time. You may have tried different approaches, had difficult conversations, or felt that the system was not designed for the boy you know.
We are not here to diagnose your son or tell you what is wrong. We are here to listen, and to help you work out whether a different kind of school environment — one that uses sport, outdoor education and mentoring as well as academics — might help him re-engage with learning and with himself.
FDSA may suit a boy who could thrive in a different environment.
- Is capable but has not reached his academic potential in a conventional setting
- Has become disengaged from traditional schooling
- Responds well to physical activity and practical, hands-on learning
- Would benefit from a smaller, more structured learning environment
- Needs clearer expectations and more consistent routines
- Would benefit from stronger individual relationships with educators
- Needs an opportunity to rebuild confidence and self-belief
This is not a checklist. A boy does not need to match every point. Suitability is always assessed individually, and the best way to find out is to speak with us.
We also recognise that FDSA is not the right fit for every student. If we believe another environment would serve your son better, we will tell you honestly.
Individual assessment
Every student is considered as an individual. We do not make assumptions based on labels or past school reports alone.
Respectful language
We do not describe students as troubled, difficult or broken. We see capable young men who need a different environment.
Honest advice
If FDSA is not the right fit, we will say so and help you think about other options.
Questions parents often ask.
No. FDSA works with boys who have not thrived in conventional schooling for a wide range of reasons. Some have disengaged academically, some find large classrooms overwhelming, and some simply learn better in a smaller, more active environment. Suitability is assessed individually — we do not make assumptions about a student based on labels.
The best way to determine whether FDSA is appropriate is to speak directly with the school. We will have a conversation with you about your son, his experiences, and what you are hoping for. From there, we can assess whether our environment is likely to be a good fit, and if so, arrange a visit.
FDSA works with boys aged approximately 11 to 17 years. The exact entry point depends on the individual student and his circumstances. We are happy to discuss this with you.
Yes. Frank Dando Sports Academy is an independent school registered to operate in Victoria. We deliver a curriculum aligned to Victorian standards, with the addition of our sport, outdoor education and personal development programs.
A member of our team will contact you to have an initial conversation. We will listen to your situation, answer your questions, and if appropriate, arrange a time for you and your son to visit the school. There is no pressure or obligation at any stage of this process.
