Alumni / Success Stories

Their stories.

The measure of the school is what happens after. These are the stories of some of our former students.

Personal growth, not just results

Success looks different for every student.

We measure success not by a single academic result, but by the kind of young man a student becomes. These stories focus on personal growth — what each student came with, what they discovered at FDSA, and where life has taken them since.

Joey

Joey

Former FDSA student

FDSA taught me respect in all aspects, discipline, perseverance, camaraderie, loyalty and mental fortitude. To see the silver lining in hard situations and to be true to your word. All lessons that have made me who I am today.

Before FDSA

Joey was struggling to engage with school and with the people around him. The conventional classroom environment was not working, and he was losing confidence in himself.

At FDSA

At FDSA, Joey found an environment where sport and learning were connected. The daily physical activity gave him an outlet and a sense of achievement, and the mentoring gave him adults he could trust. Over time, he began to re-engage — not just with school, but with the people around him.

What they learned

Joey describes learning respect, discipline, perseverance, camaraderie, loyalty and mental fortitude — and learning to see the silver lining in hard situations and to be true to his word.

Where they are now

Joey took the lessons from FDSA into his working life and personal relationships. He credits the school with shaping who he is today.

Jake

Jake

Former FDSA student

Growing up without a dad, I found it especially helpful to have the teachers as strong male role models to look up to and call on for advice; not only whilst I was a student at the school, but after too.

Before FDSA

Jake was growing up without a father figure and was struggling to find direction. He needed strong male role models and an environment where he felt he belonged.

At FDSA

The teachers at FDSA became the male role models Jake was looking for. The combination of sport, structure and genuine relationships gave him a sense of belonging and purpose that he had not found elsewhere.

What they learned

Jake says the most important thing he gained was having teachers he could look up to and call on for advice — not only while he was a student, but long after.

Where they are now

Jake stays in touch with the school and the staff who mentored him. He credits FDSA with giving him the foundation he needed to move forward in life.

Theodore

Theodore

Former FDSA student

FDSA taught me how to take life into my own hands. Through discipline and determination, I became more motivated and confident about myself.

Before FDSA

Theodore lacked motivation and confidence. He was not engaging with school and did not see a clear path forward for himself.

At FDSA

Through the discipline and structure of the FDSA program — the daily sport, the mentoring, the consistent expectations — Theodore began to see what he was capable of. The physical challenges gave him concrete evidence of his own progress, and that changed how he saw himself.

What they learned

Theodore says FDSA taught him how to take life into his own hands. Through discipline and determination, he became more motivated and confident.

Where they are now

Theodore took the discipline and determination he built at FDSA into his life beyond school.
